Gratitude sounds easy, but it’s also easy to forget. We become absorbed in our lives and giving thanks is the last thing on our minds. But being thankful can make us happier. No matter your disability, there is always something for which to be thankful.

I am happy despite the difficulties of living with cerebral palsy. It’s too easy to dwell on what I would like to change. Instead, I choose to focus on why I am grateful. Here are the top reasons for my gratitude this year:

My children

My two children are nothing like I ever imagined, and better than I could have dreamed. They are unique, and each has a generous heart. They know how to make me laugh with just one look. They challenge me to be the best version of myself so that I can lead by example. They wouldn’t choose for me to have cerebral palsy, but they accept me as I am. They help me, often without being asked. My heart breaks a little thinking about the day when they will move out on their own. But I know they will be successful and happy as they pursue their goals, and for that I am thankful.

My personal care attendants

Personal care attendants are some of the most overlooked and underpaid professionals. I am so thankful for my personal care attendants. Without them, I could not live the active life that I do. With their assistance, I can go to work, run errands, be a crazy pet lady, and keep my home organized. My attendants have been with me for years. They are reliable and join me on my crazy adventures. I am thankful to them for making my independence possible.

My extended family

I am thankful for everyone in my family. Without them having my back, I wouldn’t be where I am today. We might not talk often, but I feel them in my heart. They are always there, pushing me to be my best self. I also know that they will be there for me in an emergency. That comforts me. Having a solid support system gives me the courage to conquer any challenge that comes my way.

My faith

I’m thankful for the grace of faith that fills my soul. I feel loved and know that I have a purpose. When things are difficult — and I do have rough times — I know that I cannot give up. My life has meaning, and it’s up to me to fulfill that plan. I am happy and at peace that everything will work out in the end.
